Typeflu vs Busuu: an honest comparison for 2026
Updated:
We make Typeflu, so weigh this accordingly. We checked both apps and their prices on 2 October 2026, and we say plainly where Busuu is the better choice.
Busuu and Typeflu both speak to Arabic speakers in their own language, so people often ask which one to use. They are built for different jobs. Busuu is a full course in 14 languages that runs from A1 to C1, with native speakers in its community who correct your writing and speaking. Typeflu is a listening and spelling trainer: you hear a real sentence, type it, and fix it letter by letter, with explanations in Arabic, Spanish or English. This page compares them feature by feature and tells you when each one makes more sense.

The short version
Busuu is the bigger, broader product. It is a full course that teaches grammar, vocabulary and dialogues, then lets other learners who are native speakers check your exercises. It reaches C1, offers certificates, and has native apps on iOS and Android. Busuu says it has more than 120 million registered users.
Typeflu does one thing in depth: it trains your ear and your spelling with full-sentence dictation. Every sentence is recorded in a natural voice, you type what you hear, and the app shows you exactly which letters were wrong. It then explains the mistake in your own language and remembers the pattern. If you can read English but lose the thread when people speak, that is the gap Typeflu is built to close.
How they work
A Busuu lesson
A Busuu lesson walks you through new words and a grammar point, shows them in a short dialogue, and ends with exercises. Some exercises ask you to write or record an answer, which you can send to the community for correction. Smart Review brings back vocabulary and grammar later. Premium Plus adds AI conversations and pronunciation feedback.
A Typeflu lesson
A Typeflu lesson is a set of real sentences. You listen (as many times as you like, at 0.75× to 2× speed), then type the sentence word by word. On phones, early lessons let you build the sentence from word tiles instead. Wrong letters are marked, you fix them, and you can tap any word to see its IPA, meaning and grammar role. Reviews are scheduled with the FSRS memory model, so sentences come back right before you would forget them.
You can also import your own text or a link, such as an article or a work email, and Typeflu turns it into a private lesson with audio in about 30 seconds.
Where Busuu is better than Typeflu
- Level range. Busuu runs from A1 to C1. Typeflu's English for Arabic speakers stops at B2, its Spanish at B1 and its Portuguese at A1.
- Human feedback. Native speakers in Busuu's community correct what you write and say. Typeflu has no community corrections and no live tutors.
- Speaking. Busuu has recorded speaking exercises, and AI conversations with pronunciation feedback on Premium Plus. Typeflu does not score your pronunciation at all.
- Certificates. Busuu Premium includes McGraw Hill certificates. Typeflu gives no certificates.
- Language count. Busuu teaches 14 languages, including French, German, Japanese and Korean. Typeflu teaches three.
- Native apps and track record. Busuu has App Store and Google Play apps and years of history. Typeflu is a young product that runs as a web app you install from the browser.
- Hands-free use. Typeflu needs you to type, so it is not great on a crowded bus. Busuu has more exercises you can do with less attention.
If you want a single app that takes you from zero to upper intermediate in a language and lets real people check your writing, Busuu is the better choice.
Where Typeflu is better than Busuu
- Full-sentence dictation as the core. Every lesson is listen, type, correct. You get far more practice turning fast speech into exact words than you would from a mixed course.
- Letter-level correction. You see which letters you got wrong, not only whether the answer was right. This is where spelling habits get fixed.
- Coaching built for Arabic speakers. Mistakes are tagged by Arabic patterns, such as mixing up p and b, dropping a or the, or confusing is and are. Weak Spots lessons are then built from your own patterns.
- Explanations in your language. One tap on “Explain my mistake” tells you in Arabic, Spanish or English why your answer was wrong.
- IELTS listening for Arabic speakers. The IELTS prep course has 6 units and 288 voiced exercises covering forms, lectures, True/False/Not Given and more.
- Your own material. Import an article, an email or lyrics you own and practise with it the same day.
- European Portuguese. Typeflu teaches the Portugal variant, with Arabic explanations. Reviewers describe Busuu's Portuguese as mainly Brazilian.
- Fair pricing. Pro costs half as much in many lower-income countries, including most of the Arab world outside the Gulf.
Price
Typeflu Pro is €7.50 a month or €49 a year in Europe. Elsewhere you see a local price, and in many countries (most of Africa, the Arab world outside the Gulf, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia) Pro is half price. The free plan keeps the first lesson of every unit forever, with 5 hearts and 5 explanations a day.
Busuu has a free tier and two paid tiers, Premium and Premium Plus. Its prices change with your country, whether you pay in the app or on the web, and current offers, so we do not quote a single number. Check the price on Busuu's site or in the app before you subscribe, and read the renewal terms: billing and cancellation are the most common complaints in Busuu's Trustpilot reviews (4.2 out of 5 from about 19,800 reviews).
Which one should you pick?
- Pick Busuu if you want one structured course up to C1, you want native speakers to correct your writing and speaking, you need a certificate, or you are learning a language Typeflu does not teach.
- Pick Typeflu if you are an Arabic speaker whose reading is ahead of your listening, you are preparing for IELTS listening, you keep making the same spelling mistakes, or you want European Portuguese.
- Use both if you like Busuu's course but still miss words when people talk. Do your Busuu lesson, then 10 minutes of Typeflu dictation on the same level.
