Typeflu vs YouType: two ways to learn English by typing (2026)
Updated:
We make Typeflu, so weigh this accordingly. We checked YouType's prices and features on 2 October 2026, and we say plainly where YouType is the better choice.
YouType (youtype.app, the "Learn English by Typing" web app, not the macOS text-expansion tool with the same name) is the closest product to Typeflu we know of. Both have you listen to English and type it word by word, both keep a review system and leaderboards, and both have Arabic, Spanish and English interfaces. The differences are in price right now, difficulty settings, phones, explanations and which languages you can learn. YouType is in Early Access, so some details below may change after its launch.

The short version
If you want to try typing-based English practice today without paying, start with YouType: its courses are free during Early Access. If you study on your phone, want your mistakes explained in Arabic or Spanish, are preparing for IELTS, or want to learn Spanish or European Portuguese, Typeflu fits better. Many learners will be happy with either one, because the core exercise is the same.
How they work
Typeflu: you hear a real sentence in a natural voice, type it word by word and fix your mistakes letter by letter. You can replay as often as you like and slow the audio to 0.75× or speed it to 2×. Every word has IPA, a meaning in your language and its grammar role. When you get something wrong, one tap on "Explain my mistake" tells you why in your own language. Your mistakes are also tagged by native-language pattern (for Arabic speakers: p and b, missing a or the, is and are), and Weak Spots lessons are built from them. On phones, early lessons use word tiles you tap to build the sentence.
YouType: you listen, understand and type English word by word with instant feedback and hints. You choose how much help you get: Easy shows the whole English sentence, so you are copying; Medium keeps the first letter of each word; Hard is pure dictation from audio. Courses are organised by scenario (greetings, shopping, travel, daily habits and more) and split into chapters. Wrong answers go to a mistake notebook automatically, and there are notebooks for scheduled review, vocabulary and your own notes.
Where YouType is better than Typeflu
- Price today. All available courses are free until YouType officially launches. Typeflu's free plan gives you the first lesson of every unit, and the rest needs Pro.
- Adjustable difficulty. Being able to start by copying and move to first-letter cues and then pure dictation is a smart ramp for beginners. Typeflu has no copy mode: you always type from audio (with tap-to-build tiles on phones in early lessons).
- Word audio in two accents. YouType's word lookups play US and UK pronunciation. Typeflu's English courses use an American voice.
- Review notebooks. A separate mistake notebook, vocabulary notebook and notes notebook is a clear, hands-on way to organise review. Note that full notebook access is for paying members, even during Early Access.
- Leaderboards. Daily, weekly, monthly and all-time rankings by study time, which you can join anonymously.
- Chinese interface. Typeflu has no Chinese interface.
Where Typeflu is better than YouType
- More than English. Typeflu also teaches Spanish (9 courses, A1 to B1) and European Portuguese (2 A1 courses) to Arabic speakers. YouType is English only.
- Explanations in your language. "Explain my mistake" tells you in Arabic, Spanish or English why your answer was wrong (5 a day free, unlimited on Pro). Native-language coaching spots the errors your first language causes and builds Weak Spots lessons from them. We did not find this kind of coaching in YouType's feature list.
- Phones and offline. Typeflu installs as an app (PWA) on Android, iOS and desktop, early phone lessons use tap-to-build tiles, and your next lessons work offline. YouType says a keyboard works best and that on a phone you can browse and try the demo. We found no offline mode.
- Your own text. Import an article, an email or lyrics you own and get a private lesson with audio in about 30 seconds (2 a week free, 30 a month on Pro).
- IELTS. Typeflu has a B2 IELTS course with 288 voiced exercises across listening, reading, writing and speaking tasks. We found no exam prep in YouType.
- A known catalog. English for Arabic speakers runs from A1 to B2 across 31 courses. YouType's level range and catalog size after launch are not published yet.
- Price after YouType launches. Typeflu Pro is €7.50 a month against YouType's $9.99. On yearly plans the two are close (€49 and $59.99), but Typeflu charges half price in many countries, including most of the Arab world outside the Gulf and Latin America.
What neither app does
Neither app scores your speaking or pronunciation (YouType lists AI features as "coming soon"), neither has live tutors, and neither gives certificates. Both are young products. Typeflu is for learners aged 13 and up, is not in the App Store or Play Store, and needs your attention: typing is not something you do while driving.
Price
YouType: free during Early Access for all available courses, then $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year (about $5 a month), the same price in USD everywhere, with tax added at checkout. Both plans have the same benefits, and you keep access until the end of a paid period if you cancel. There is a free demo exercise with no sign-up.
Typeflu: the free plan covers the first lesson of every unit, forever, with 5 hearts, 5 explanations a day, 2 imports a week and 1 review session a day. Pro unlocks every lesson, unlimited hearts, explanations and review, 30 imports a month and a free weekly streak freeze. It is €7.50 a month or €49 a year in Europe, shown in local currency elsewhere, and half price in many lower-income countries. Checkout is by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Which one should you pick?
- Pick YouType if you want free English typing practice right now, you study at a computer with a keyboard, you like starting by copying before moving to pure dictation, or you want a Chinese interface.
- Pick Typeflu if you are an Arabic speaker who wants explanations in Arabic, you practise mostly on your phone or offline, you are preparing for IELTS, or you want to learn Spanish or European Portuguese.
- If you are a Spanish speaker learning English, be aware that Typeflu has only one A1 English course in Spanish so far. YouType, free today with a Spanish interface, may give you more to practise.
- Use both if you like: they train the same skill, and different sentences and voices help your ear.
We checked every price and feature on this page on October 2, 2026. Prices change and can differ by country, so confirm on each app's own site before you pay.
Questions
Is YouType free?
Right now, yes for courses: during Early Access all available courses are free until the official launch. Full access to the four notebooks is already for members. After launch, courses need a paid plan at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
Is YouType the same as the YouType Mac app?
No. youtype.app teaches English by typing. A separate, unrelated YouType for macOS is a text-expansion and autocorrect tool.
Is YouType good for Arabic speakers?
It has an Arabic interface and a setting for the language of sentence translations, so you can use it in Arabic. We could not check how complete the Arabic course translations are. If you want explanations of your mistakes in Arabic and coaching on errors typical for Arabic speakers, Typeflu is built for that.
Can I use YouType on my phone?
YouType says a computer or tablet with a physical keyboard works best, and that on a phone you can browse and try the demo. We found no App Store or Play Store app. Typeflu installs on phones as an app and uses tap-to-build tiles in early lessons.
Which is cheaper, Typeflu or YouType?
Today YouType, because its courses are free during Early Access. After it launches, Typeflu Pro is cheaper per month (€7.50 against $9.99), the yearly plans are close, and Typeflu is half price in many countries.
Does either app teach speaking?
No. Neither scores your pronunciation or has live tutors. For speaking, add a tutor or a pronunciation app alongside.
