The best IELTS listening practice app in 2026

Updated:

We make Typeflu, so weigh this accordingly. We checked every price and feature on 2 October 2026, and we say plainly when another app is the better choice.

Most IELTS candidates do not lose Listening marks because they understood nothing. They lose them on a misspelt street name, a missing plural -s, or an a they never heard. So the best IELTS listening practice app is really two things: something that shows you the real test format, and something that trains your ear and your spelling every day. Below are five apps that do one or both, ranked for a typical IELTS candidate. Official prep comes first because nothing replaces the real task types. Typeflu, the app we make, is the right pick for one specific group: Arabic speakers who keep losing marks on spelling and small words.

The picks

  1. 1 British Council IELTS Prep App

    Best for
Learning the real test format, for free
    Price
    Free
    How you practise
Practice tests and exercises in the real IELTS task types

This is the official, free app from the British Council, and it is where most candidates should start. It covers all four skills with practice tests, plus speaking-interview videos and grammar and vocabulary practice. For Listening, the value is simple: you practise on the same task types you will meet on test day, so form completion, note completion and multiple choice stop being a surprise.

Where it falls short: it practises the test, it does not teach you to hear English. If you are below B1, doing practice test after practice test will mostly tell you that you are not ready yet. The interface is English only, and there are no explanations in Arabic or Spanish. Use it for regular timed practice and pair it with a daily ear-training habit.

  2. 2 Road to IELTS

    Best for
Long, structured official prep, especially if you book with the British Council
    Price
Free Test Drive (about 10 hours). Last Minute adds about 20 hours, free when you register for IELTS with the British Council. Full version: price varies, check their site
    How you practise
Guided lessons, tips and practice tests in the real task types

Road to IELTS is the British Council's bigger course. The free Test Drive gives you about 10 hours of material. The Last Minute version adds about 20 more hours and is free once you register for your test with the British Council. The Full version has about 120 hours and 36 practice tests; you can buy it, and some libraries give free access.

If you have booked with the British Council, there is no good reason not to use it: it is the most complete official practice in this list. Like the Prep App, it is English only and aimed at test format. It will not explain, in your language, why you wrote adress instead of address.

  3. 3 Daily Dictation

    Best for
Free listen-and-type drills with British and Australian accents
    Price
Free website. The iOS app is free with ads; PRO from $2.99 a month or $19.99 lifetime (US App Store)
    How you practise
Listen to a short clip, type what you hear, check your answer

Daily Dictation is a free website with more than 1,000 English dictation exercises, and it has a dedicated IELTS Listening section recorded with British and Australian accents. There are also TOEFL and TOEIC sections. You listen, type, check, and move on. The iOS app is rated 4.8 stars from about 1,600 ratings.

It is the best free way to add dictation to your IELTS routine, and it beats Typeflu on price, volume and accent variety. What it does not do: there is no structured course, the interface is English only, and when you get a word wrong it shows you the answer but does not explain the pattern behind your mistake.

  4. 4 Typeflu Made by us

    Best for
Arabic speakers who keep losing marks on spelling and small words
    Price
Free: the first lesson of every unit. Pro: €7.50 a month or €49 a year in Europe, local prices elsewhere, half price in many countries
    How you practise
Hear a sentence, type it word by word, fix it letter by letter

Typeflu has an IELTS course for Arabic speakers at B2 level: 6 units covering Listening forms and lectures, Reading paraphrase and True/False/Not Given, Writing and Speaking, with 288 voiced exercises. In the Listening units you hear a sentence, type it, and fix it letter by letter. Your mistakes are tagged by Arabic-speaker patterns, such as a missing a or the, is versus are, and p written as b. One tap on “Explain my mistake” tells you in Arabic why your answer was wrong, and spaced review brings the words you missed back before you forget them.

Be clear about the limits. The IELTS course has an Arabic interface only. The voice is American, while the real test uses a range of accents, so add British and Australian practice from Daily Dictation or the official apps. There are no full mock tests, no band score estimate and no speaking scoring. It is a web app you install from the browser, not a store app. It works best as the daily 15 minutes that fixes your spelling, next to official practice tests.

  5. 5 IELTS by IDP app

    Best for
Booking, results and a free 7-day prep challenge
    Price
    Free
    How you practise
Short prep challenge, articles, videos and podcasts

If you take IELTS with IDP, you will probably install this app anyway: it handles booking and results. It also has a free 7-day prep challenge and a library of articles, videos and podcasts with test tips.

For Listening practice specifically, it is lighter than the British Council tools: more advice and less drilling. Use it for tips and logistics, and get your actual listening hours elsewhere.

How we chose

Why typing what you hear matters in IELTS Listening

In form and note completion you write the answer, and a wrong spelling or a missing word costs the mark even if you understood the speaker. That is why dictation, writing down exactly what you hear, is such good training: it shows you the gap between “I understood it” and “I can write it correctly”. We wrote a step-by-step plan in our guide to IELTS Listening with dictation (in Arabic). If Reading is your weak paper, our guide to True/False/Not Given (also in Arabic) covers the question type that catches most people.

Who should skip Typeflu

Which one should you pick?

Most candidates will do best with two of these, not one: an official app for the format, and a dictation app for daily ear and spelling work. Looking for general English dictation instead? See our list of the best dictation apps for language learners.

We checked every price and feature on this page on October 2, 2026. Prices change and can differ by country, so confirm on each app's own site before you pay.

Questions

What is the best free app for IELTS listening practice?

The British Council IELTS Prep App, because it is free, official and uses the real task types. Add the free IELTS section of Daily Dictation for daily dictation with British and Australian accents.

Is Duolingo good for IELTS?

Not as IELTS prep. Duolingo can build general English, but it does not teach the IELTS format or task types. Its Duolingo English Test is a separate exam ($70, taken online) that some universities accept instead of IELTS, so check what your university or visa asks for.

Does dictation help with IELTS Listening?

Yes, especially for form and note completion, where spelling and small words like a, the and plural -s decide the mark. Dictation shows you exactly which sounds and words you miss.

Is Typeflu good for Arabic speakers preparing for IELTS?

Yes, if your level is around B2 and your mistakes are spelling, articles and plurals. The IELTS course has an Arabic interface, explains each mistake in Arabic and has 288 voiced exercises across 6 units. It does not replace official practice tests.

Is there an IELTS course on Typeflu with an English or Spanish interface?

Not yet. The IELTS course is only available with an Arabic interface. If you use Typeflu in English or Spanish, the official apps and Daily Dictation are the better choice for IELTS.
