PTE write from dictation practice

Practise the PTE write from dictation task the way it works on test day: you hear a short academic sentence once, type it from memory, and every correctly spelled word earns a point. Press start, listen, type and check. After checking you can replay the sentence to hear what you missed. It is free and needs no account.

How write from dictation works in PTE

In write from dictation you hear a short sentence, usually a few seconds long, and type it exactly as you heard it. The recording plays only once. The task appears near the end of the listening part of PTE Academic and PTE Core, and it is scored on both listening and writing, which is why test-takers often call it one of the most important listening tasks.

How to use this practice tool

  1. Press Start. The sentence plays once, like in the exam.
  2. Type straight away while the sound is fresh. Get the content words first (nouns, verbs, numbers), then fill in the small words.
  3. Press Check to see your score and every word you missed.
  4. Replay the sentence to hear the missing words, then say the sentence aloud once.
  5. Press Next sentence. A session of 10 to 15 sentences a day is enough to see your score rise within a couple of weeks.

Tips that raise your write from dictation score

Where the sentences come from

These are exam-style academic sentences from our upper-intermediate and IELTS courses, recorded in a natural American voice. They are not real PTE questions and not a list of predicted or repeated exam sentences. Practising with fresh sentences trains the skill itself, which is what the exam measures. If you also need IELTS, try our English dictation practice at B2 level or read about spelling in IELTS listening.

Questions

How many times do you hear the sentence in write from dictation?

Once. That is why this tool plays each sentence only one time before you check. After checking you can replay it for practice.

How is PTE write from dictation scored?

Each word from the sentence that you spell correctly earns a point. Missing or misspelled words lose only their own point, so writing most of the sentence still scores well.

Does write from dictation count for writing too?

Yes. It contributes to both the listening and the writing score, which is why it is worth regular practice.

Are these real PTE exam sentences?

No. They are exam-style sentences we wrote and recorded for our courses. They train the same skill without claiming to be leaked or predicted questions.

Is this PTE practice free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many sentences you practise.
