Typeflu

Free English dictation practice

Pick a level, press play and type the sentence you hear. When you check, every word is marked: green when you got it, red when you wrote something else, and the correct sentence appears underneath. The audio is recorded in a natural American voice and you can slow it down to 0.75×. There is no sign-up and nothing to install.

How to use this dictation tool

  1. Choose a level. Start lower than you think: a level where you get most words right teaches you more than one where you guess.
  2. Listen once at normal speed without typing, to get the meaning.
  3. Play it again and type. Use the slow button for the part you missed instead of guessing.
  4. Check and read the marked words. Small words like a, the, is and endings like -s and -ed are the usual misses.
  5. Say the correct sentence out loud once before you go on. It links the sound, the spelling and your own voice.

Why dictation improves your listening

What the score means

The score counts how many words of the correct sentence appear in your answer in the right order. Capital letters and punctuation do not count, so hello, how are you is the same as Hello, how are you? Contractions are accepted both ways where the sentence allows it, for example I'm and I am.

Questions

Is this English dictation practice free?

Yes. The tool on this page is free, has no sign-up and no limit on how many sentences you do.

Which level should I start with?

Start with the highest level where you get most words right on the first try. If more than half the words come out red, go down one level; if almost every sentence is green, go up.

Can I slow the audio down?

Yes. The slow button plays the sentence at 0.75× speed, which separates the words without changing how they sound.

Is dictation good for IELTS listening?

Yes. IELTS listening marks spelling, numbers and small words, which is exactly what dictation trains. The B2 level includes IELTS-style sentences with names, numbers and details.

Does punctuation count?

No. The checker ignores capital letters and punctuation and only compares the words.
